Your Legal Affairs

June 1, 2018

In the US, there are certain legal matters that you will have to take care of before and after your nuptials  These range from contracts signed with your vendors, to your marriage license, to changing your name on your personal documents.  Every state is different so you should check with your marriage license bureau or the county clerk's office to make sure you're legally compliant.

If you're planning on having a destination wedding, legal requirements vary by destination as well, so make sure you're aware of those too.

Below is a list of just a few of the legal matters that will need your attention:

  1. Name change - are you going to hyphenate, keep your maiden name, or take your spouse's name?

  2. Personal identification documents  - driver's license, passport, work id, etc

  3. Financial documents - bank accounts, insurance papers, stocks & bonds.

  4. Your Last Will and Testament.

If you have a wedding planner, he or she will make sure that you are in compliance with all of the legal requirements by state or country.  If you're planning your wedding on your own, do your research to make sure you have everything covered.
